With Microsoft support officially discontinued, Doctor Web is continuing to ensure that its products are compatible with Windows 10—for as long as this is possible, taking into account security requirements.

Long-term support for all versions, starting with Windows XP
Even though many Windows versions lack official support, they are still actively being used in individual infrastructures—including in industry, automated control systems and specialized corporate environments.
Taking into account the needs of these users, Doctor Web is continuing to provide support for all OS versions, starting with Windows XP, in current versions of Dr.Web solutions for PC protection.

Doctor Web's statement regarding claims of a successful attack on its infrastructure

On October 8, 2024, a Telegram channel published information about an alleged successful cyberattack on our company's infrastructure.

A targeted attack on our systems and services was indeed carried out in September. We reported on that immediately in this news publication while the actual crisis was still in progress: https://news.drweb.com/show/?i=14907&lng=en

We managed to promptly thwart the attack and then proceeded by disconnecting our systems from the network for a thorough examination in accordance with our established security policy. The attackers intended to demand a ransom from Doctor Web, but we never negotiate with perpetrators. As law enforcement agencies are looking into the incident right now, we cannot give out any additional details so as to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigation.

Most of the claims that appeared in Telegram are false. Our development environment and customer information haven't been affected by the attack. Our software module and virus database updates pose no threat whatsoever to Dr.Web users.

At Doctor Web, we have stepped up security for all our systems and services. We're also examining the screenshots circulating in Telegram channels to ensure that no portion of our relevant data has been compromised.

Doctor Web resumed virus database updates after the attack on its infrastructure

Now that the dangerous situation involving the attack on Doctor Web's infrastructure has been resolved successfully, we're happy to bring you up to speed on the latest developments and present the security incident's complete timeline.

The attack on our infrastructure began on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

We were monitoring it closely and maintained control over the situation.

On September 16, 2024, Doctor Web’s information security team detected signs of unauthorised interference with our IT infrastructure.

Following established security policies, we disconnected all our servers from the network and initiated comprehensive security diagnostics. To analyse and eliminate the incident's consequences, we implemented a series of measures, including the use of Dr.Web FixIt! for Linux. The gathered data allowed our security experts to successfully isolate the threat and ensure that our customers remained unaffected by it.

In accordance with our security policy, we temporarily disconnected certain nodes in Doctor Web's infrastructure from the Internet to perform additional checks. This resulted in a short-term interruption in the availability of Dr.Web virus database updates.

On Saturday, September 14, Doctor Web specialists recorded a targeted attack on the company's resources. The attempt to harm our infrastructure was prevented in a timely manner, and no user whose system was protected by Dr.Web was affected.

For the time being, in accordance with the company’s security protocol, all resources are disconnected from the network so that they can be checked. Because of this, the release of Dr.Web virus databases is temporarily suspended. Our Dr.Web FixIt! service, its special pre-release version for Linux, is being used to diagnose and eliminate the consequences of the attack. Doctor Web has released Dr.Web FixIt! — a new solution for ensuring the information security of PCs running Microsoft Windows.

Dr.Web FixIt! has been designed to diagnose information security incidents remotely and eliminate their consequences. It generates the FixIt! diagnostic utility to detect traces of malware that are present and, based on its report, carries out diagnostics. If malware is detected, the FixIt! curing utility is created to eliminate the consequences of infection.

Unlike products designed to detect already known malicious programs (or programs similar to them) with the help of virus databases, Dr.Web FixIt! detects brand-new malware as well as programs that are used to carry out targeted attacks and cannot be detected by any other tools.

“This service will be useful for specialists whose duties include incident analysis”, says Igor Zdobnov, the head of Doctor Web's virus laboratory. — “Especially when it comes to checking a station to which there is no physical access. The solution consists of a data-collection system, an analytical part involving the creation and application of filters for the required data categories, and mechanisms for ascertaining causes and curing incidents in the user's system. Unlike desktop applications with similar features, Dr.Web FixIt! operates as a web application. Both at the moment of collection and during the analysis process, we use our own developments in the field of cloud computing”.

Initially, the service was designed for internal use by Doctor Web. Its creation began at the initiative of our technical specialists who got tired of sorting out tickets and solving the same problems over and over again for many years. So they got the idea to make a portal in which the company would aggregate all of its knowledge and experience in terms of OS infections, detection algorithms and threat curing.

“There exists a system with OS data”, explains Konstantin Yudin, Doctor Web anti-virus project manager. — Depending on the tasks involved (technical support, virus laboratory, development, research, etc.), the operator selects or creates the slice of data they need to analyse and has the opportunity to cure or correct issues in the system. The value is in the unique filters that identify the necessary slices, infections, problems, anomalies, etc., out of tons of data”.

The target group for the service is teams of information security specialists responsible for security monitoring and incident response (SOC centers).
