Dr.Web 6.0: new features, new components, new products

March 15, 2010

The Russian anti-virus vendor Doctor Web announced the release of Dr.Web products v. 6 for protection of Windows workstations and file servers. Products of the latest version include Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows, Dr.Web Security Space (32- and 64-bit) and Dr.Web for Windows file servers (64-bit platform) that underwent major changes compared with products of the previous fifth version. At the same time new products featuring the firewall have been added into the product line: Dr.Web Anti-virus Pro and Dr.Web Security Space Pro.

The most significant modification incorporated in Dr.Web products of the sixth version is the completely changed file monitor SpIDer Guard. It provides support of 64-bit versions of Windows and improves performance and efficiency of anti-viruses achieved by optimizing interaction between the file monitor and the anti-virus engine. Now the Scanning Engine service processes scan requests from all components of the anti-virus.

Dr.Web SpIDer Mail also underwent significant changes. The improved anti-virus control module SpIDer Agent now features two operation modes: user mode and administration mode.

The improved updater module allows users to receive renewed key files with no effort while Doctor Web’s partners can now provide Dr.Web license renewal services.

The list of supported operating systems remains the same. Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows and Dr.Web Security Space (32-bit) can be installed on computers running any version of Windows starting from 2000 SP 4 + Rollup 1 while 64-bit versions support Windows XP SP2 and later versions of Windows; Dr.Web for Windows file servers requires Windows 2003/2008 (64-bit).

Requirements of Dr.Web products featuring the firewall (Dr.Web Anti-virus Pro and Dr.Web Security Space Pro) are the same. The firewall includes a packet and application filters to control network connections that use certain protocols with particular destination ports or addresses as well as network activity of user applications. With the firewall users can create filtering rules for all processes that request network connections. More information about the firewall included in Dr.Web products can be found here.
